HF Hotels Group and environmental responsibility

Discover our sustainability practices

Since its founding in 2004, the HF Hotels Group has implemented, in every single one of its hotel units, procedures, techniques and materials aimed at the rational use of all our resources and at an increase in the positive impact of our business on the environment. This commitment applies to everything from the construction and renovation of the hotel's buildings and areas, to everyday routines and tasks.
The Group continually reinforces its environmental policy, involving, educating and creating awareness, not only for employees, but also guests, during the daily use of our services and facilities.
Because every little action counts, we strive to make progress and improve every single day, and we count on you, so that together we can contribute to a healthier planet!

How can a hotel reduce the impact of its carbon footprint?

Sustainability and energy saving

Construction of buildings

Construction of buildings

Starting with the construction of the building, use, for example, a solar water heating system. The HF Fénix Music and HF Fénix Garden hotels, the two hotels of the Group that were built from scratch, between 2008 and 2015, respectively, have solar panels on the roofs of their buildings. This solution is a great example of energy optimisation for a building, seeing as it's a clean energy source with no economic burden.
Continuous renovations and improvements

Continuous renovations and improvements

When renovating existing buildings, it's important to perform an assessment and implement actions for improvement. Not only with the use of solar panels in hotel buildings built from scratch, but also with the evaluation and optimisation of resources and technologies used up to renovation, energy saving is present in the HF Hotels Group's policy. During the renovation of the façades of the HF Ipanema Park and HF Ipanema Porto hotels, for example, the techniques, materials and procedures adopted permitted a reduction of about 170 tons in the annual CO2 emissions, by reducing the need for heating in the winter and increasing the ventilation and cooling capacity in the summer!
Lighting

Lighting

In 2009, the HF Ipanema Park, HF Ipanema Porto, HF Fénix Porto and HF Fénix Lisboa hotels were pioneers in replacing all their lighting with LED technology. With this initiative, significant improvements have been achieved in light quality, valorisation of the design of each space and a reduction in temperature (since these light bulbs do not emit heat), which has consequently led to a reduction in air conditioning and maintenance costs. In all of the hotels, the annual savings were equivalent to 321,819 kg CO2/year, or in other words, to 16,091 trees! Currently, all of the hotels of the Group use this technology exclusively.
Water

Water

Through the installation of flow reducers in our taps and awareness regarding the efficient use of this precious commodity.
Amenities

Amenities

Use of amenities dispensers, like the ones we have at HF Fénix Music and HF Fénix Garden, which reduces the daily waste of single dose packaging. When opting for single use bottles, choose eco-friendly amenities.
Plastic

Plastic

Take action and avoid the use of disposable and single use plastic. Did you know that all the straws used in the bars and restaurants of the Group are biodegradable? In addition, it is important to separate waste for the recycling of paper, glass, plastic and organic waste - we use water dispensers in our offices; we only use glass water bottles in our restaurants/bars; whenever possible we use recyclable materials, namely in the production of all our communication and marketing materials.
Awareness, education, consciousness

Awareness, education, consciousness!

It's important to evolve and contribute to our planet's life and sustainability every single day!
Recycling

Recycling

In addition to paper, glass, plastic and organic waste, it is possible to recycle ink cartridges, toners, used light bulbs, cooking oils, batteries, coffee capsules and end-of-life appliances.
Air conditioning

Air conditioning

Turning off the air conditioning and opening the windows while the room is being cleaned, for example, while also creating awareness regarding its efficient use.
