'When in Rome, do as the Romans do' . Do you want to avoid tourist attractions and experience an alternative trip? This article is for you.

Casa de Chá da Boa Nova
An architectural work by Siza Vieira, a Portuguese architect awarded with the Pritzker Prize in 1992, Casa de Chá is built on the rocks “hand in hand with the sea”, in Leça da Palmeira, a few minutes from Porto. It’s currently open to the public as a restaurant, led by the Portuguese chef Rui Paula, and already has a Michelin star.
Gardens of Palácio de Cristal
In addition to being a green walk, away from the hustle of the city, these gardens provide a panoramic view over the Douro river. Less than a ten minute walking distance if you’re staying at the HF Ipanema Porto, HF Fénix Porto or HF Tuela Porto. Discover its nooks and corners, especially Jardim dos Sentimentos (the garden of feelings).
Arts district
That’s what people call to the district of Rua Miguel Bombarda, where you’ll find art galleries and stores with alternative clothing, amazing cafés, grocery shops and ateliers. During the event “Inaugurações Simultâneas” (simultaneous inaugurations), all the galleries present new exhibitions and entertainment fills the streets.
Train ride through the Douro line
It’s a one-day tour (round trip)! The route to Pocinho is done through the Douro line, which means it’s a ride filled with fantastic landscapes. It’s a day surrounded by nature that can last for as long as you want. From May to October, it’s possible to go for a ride on the historical train, with wooden carriage, between Régua and Tua.
Traditional grocery shops
Among the most famous, you can find Pérola do Bolhão or Favorita do Bolhão. Between tradition and gourmet is Comer e Chorar por Mais. The O Pretinho do Bolhão on Rua Bonjardim, downtown Porto, is one of the oldest grocery shops in Porto, where you can shop or relax on the “hidden” terrace.
