Urban art in Lisbon

What to do in Lisbon: urban art guide

29/01/2025

Lisbon is one of the world's main urban art cities, with pieces created by national and international artists, galleries dedicated to it and even a festival.

Over the last few years, national and international artists started taking over walls all over Lisbon, making it one of the world's most important cities regarding urban art.GAU (the city's official urban art gallery) was created in 2008 and its goal is to promote spaces, both public and private, for this type of artistic expression. The different pieces, from murals to installations, make the city more colourful and put on the map districts that would otherwise be left invisible to the visitors and even to its residents, while renovating the city and always leaving a message.

Throughout the years, urban art has earned a spotlight in Lisbon. In addition to a walk around the city to appreciate these artworks, you can visit the Underdogs gallery, also dedicated to the languages of urban-inspired visual and graphic culture. Discover the urban art festival, Muro, or visit the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art of Cascais.

Portuguese artists, such as Vhils or Bordalo II, already known across the border, are present in this urban art itinerary in Lisbon, as well as international artists, such as the duo PichiAvo (Spanish), Andrea Tarli (Italian), Shepard Fairey (American) or Os Gémeos (Brazilian), whose graffiti on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo was considered one of the ten best graffiti in the world by The Guardian.
